Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment (DAWN OF THE DEAD) are remaking John Carpenter's classic horror flick THE THING and have signed "Battlestar Galactica" producer Ronald D. Moore to write the script. The original film, which starred Kurt Russell, Keith David and oatmeal pitchman Wilford Brimley, takes place in Antarctica where a shape-shifting alien organism has wreaked havoc. The movie, and to a lesser degree its predecessor THE THING FROM ANOTHER PLANET, are based on the story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr. The producers of this remake say they are aiming for this film to be more of a "companion piece" than a remake, which to me sounds just like BS semantics. It is what it is folks. Just like the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING wasn't really much of a prequel at all. Carpenter is no doubt smarting from the atrocious remake of THE FOG. Another one of his classics, HALLOWEEN, is currently getting the remake treatment at Dimension courtesy of Rob Zombie.
